My article in The Liberal Patriot - "Building a More Resilient Navy"
Variety will help produce the flexible Navy America needs.
Hi everyone,
Today, The Liberal Patriot - one of the best political outlets on Substack - published an article I wrote on the value of variety in U.S. Navy ship and aircraft production. While it may not sound like this has anything to do with the quandary of progress in American politics, I think the military can have excessive faith in progress as easily as any other segment of society.
China’s military leaders are probably looking at Ukraine - where Russia tried to win a blitzkrieg with conventional forces and has been stymied for two years - and saying, “let’s not do that.” Instead of relying too heavily on expensive, high-tech, manned aircraft like the F-35 to win a war with China in the defense of Taiwan, the Navy should invest in a wider range of ships and planes, and be prepared for a wider range of conflicts. That includes Chinese “gray zone” tactics that don’t look like traditional war, but can just as easily threaten American interests.
The Liberal Patriot is an excellent source for pragmatic, center-left political analysis. If the Biden campaign isn’t reading them every day, they’re making a mistake.
My very best to you all.
